Cut apple slices into small bite-size pieces being careful to cut away ends if any apple skin remains. Put apple pieces into large mixing bowl. Sprinkle with a little lemon juice and mix by hand. Lemon juice prevents the apple pieces from oxidizing (turning brown.) After all apples are cut into pieces, mix the pieces of different apples together to distribute the flavors. Be gentle -- don't cause the apple pieces to bruise! Add all dry ingredients -- flour, oats, granulated sugar, natural sugar, brown sugar, baking soda, baking powder, salt, apple pie spice, and cinnamon.
Melt the stick of unsalted butter in a microwave. Don't boil or burn the butter. Pour melted butter over the apple mixture and mix again to distribute the butter throughout the apple mix.
Spray the glass top for the casserole and place it on top. Put the casserole on the middle rack of the pre-heated oven. It is a good idea to put a large flat round pan like a pizza pan on a second rack under the casserole. This dessert often bubbles over and drips thick goo inside the oven. A pan underneath will save hours of oven cleanup.
Bake for one hour (60 minutes). Remove carefully from oven. Allow to cool for two hours before serving. Yum! |
